Mashu Kō is part of Master-An Ainu Story - a story about a leader of the indigenous Ainu community of Hokkaido, Japan. Sparsely populated and covered in snow for around 6 months of the year, Hokkaido is know by the Ainu as ‘Ainu Mosir’ - The Land of The Ainu. Their way of life was completely integrated with and reliant on the abundant nature of the island and the images in this series show a landscape that has been colonised by the Japanese but still retains a sense of the spirit of the Ainu.
Ainu Kotan means Ainu Village, and it is the focal point for the Ainu community in Akan, including shops, restaurants, woodworking workshops and is a venue for local gatherings during festivals.
Printed on the highest quality giclée hahnemühle rag photographic paper which gives a rich textured, almost hand painted feel.
