Mashu Kō is part of Master-An Ainu Story - a story about a leader of the indigenous Ainu community of Hokkaido, Japan. Sparsely populated and covered in snow for around 6 months of the year, Hokkaido is know by the Ainu as ‘Ainu Mosir’ - The Land of The Ainu. Their way of life was completely integrated with and reliant on the abundant nature of the island and the images in this series show a landscape that has been colonised by the Japanese but still retains a sense of the spirit of the Ainu.
Known traditionally as Kamui-to ("Lake of the Gods"), the lake holds deep sacred meaning for the indigenous Ainu people. It is one of the clearest and purest lakes in the world, with a depth of 212 meters and no rivers flowing in or out
Printed on the highest quality giclée hahnemühle rag photographic paper which gives a rich textured, almost hand painted feel.
