Pennishiri is part of Master-An Ainu Story - a story about a leader of the indigenous Ainu community of Hokkaido, Japan. Sparsely populated and covered in snow for around 6 months of the year, Hokkaido is know by the Ainu as ‘Ainu Mosir’ - The Land of The Ainu. Their way of life was completely integrated with and reliant on the abundant nature of the island and the images in this series show a landscape that has been colonised by the Japanese but still retains a sense of the spirit of the Ainu.

Pennishiri is the Ainu name for the mountain that overlooks Lake Akan - where one of the largest Ainu populations in Hokkaido reside. It is called Ō-Akan in Japanese which translates to ‘Man Mountain’ in both languages, and it sits across the lake from ‘Woman Mountain’.

Printed on the highest quality giclée hahnemühle rag photographic paper which gives a rich textured, almost hand painted feel.
